America Punches Their Ticket Tonight
By: John | January 31st, 2007Club America is in Peru, and barring any miracle 6 goal blowout, will qualify for the group stage of Copa Libertadores after their game with Sporting Cristal.
Off the heals of a very impressive 5-0 victory last week in Toluca’s Invierno (America is banned from playing Libertadores matches at the Azteca after some incidents with Sao Caetano some years ago), Las Aguilas will join Toluca and Necaxa in the Libertadores draw.
Don’t expect to see the same success as in the Copa Sudamericana, though. CONMEBOL announced last week that in no way, shape, or form will there be an all Mexican final. If all 3 teams survive the group stage, they will be stacked in the same bracket, and 2 of the 3 will probably face off in the round of 16.
If America survives tonight, they will be placed in Group A with Banfield, Libertad de Asuncion, and El Nacional de Quito
