And then there was one…

Toluca and Necaxa both tanked there clausuras in an effort to concentrate on advancing in the Copa Libertadores. After last night’s 1-0 Nacional victory over Los Electricistas, both Necaxa and Toluca have been unceremoniously bounced from the Libertadores. That leaves Club America as the lone Mexican hope for hoisting the coveted trophy.

America’s prize for knocking off Colo Colo in the round of 16 is a date with #1 seed, Santos, who had to come back from a 2 goal deficit at home to defeat surprising Caracas 3-2. Caracas is the team that knocked River Plate out of the tournament, and very nearly claimed another prized scalp if not for Ze Roberto.

Necaxa did everything it could to try to get the 1-0 victory that would have put them through to the quarters, but were denied each and every time by Nacional’s 20 year-old keeper, Fernando Muslera. the young keeper made at least five world class saves. He was without a doubt the MOM.

Toluca faced a much tougher task in their 2nd leg vs. Cucuta as they had to erase a 4 goal deficit. Impossible, you say? Ask Barcelona…. They did pressure the Colombians enough to get 2 goals, but not enough to advance.

So as Necaxa and Toluca have fallen off, America will have a very difficult task ahead of them. America faces the daunting task of having to play not only Santos, but could possibly face Guadalajara if they indeed advance in the local tournament.
