Another title for Pachuca as Blanco bows out
By: Chris | May 27th, 2007Whoever is making the title cases for Pachuca is a busy man at the moment. The Tuzos just keep adding to their collection, as they claimed the Clausura title, thanks to a 1-1 draw Sunday night against América, to win on aggregate 3-2.
With the title, Pachuca is now the reigning champions of Mexico, CONCACAF, and the Copa Sudamericana, with all those titles coming within the last 6 months.
The game also marked the final appearance with the Águilas for veteran Cuauhtémoc Blanco, who will be leaving this summer to join MLS’s Chicago Fire.
Taking a 2-1 lead going into Sunday’s game at the Hidalgo, both teams struggled to create chances in the first half.
It was a different story in the second half, and things livened up when Blanco scored on his final appearance, placing a beautiful free kick in the top right corner past Pachuca keeper Miguel Calero to give Ámerica a 1-0 advantage on the night and tieing the aggregate at 2 in the 68th minute.
It seemed destined for extra time until Pachuca’s man of the final came through. Juan Carlos Cacho, who scored both of the Tuzos’s goal in the first leg, found the back of the net as he beat his man at the far post to direct home a Damián Álvarez cross in the 82nd minute.
