Border War Tonight
By: John | February 7th, 2007Looking around the world, it is hard to find a international derby that matches the intensity of the US-Mexico rivalry. George Allen, the venerable Washington Redskins coach, always said that a rivalry isn’t a rivalry until the other team starts winning. The series that was dominated by Mexico in its infancy has been completely turned around by the US. Ladies and Gentlemen, we’ve got a rivalry.
I’d thought about giving a game preview today, but as both teams debut new coaches, chances are the action will be mostly disjointed with fleeting moments of brilliance. I smell a draw.
But the whole rivalry thing made wonder about what bodering country rivalries are truly the nastiest. So I have listed them here:
El Salvador – Honduras. It may not register today as a heated rivalry, but back in 1969, an el salvador victory over the catrachos led to a 3 day military battle.
England – Scotland. How hard was it for rangers fans to stomach Paul Gascoigne scoring the goal of his life for England vs Scotland in Euro 96?
Germany – France. I still can’t beleive France lost a 3-1 lead in Sevilla.
Brazil – Argentina. The best rivalry in the world game.
US-Mexico. dos a zero are three little words that salt the Mexican soccer fan’s deepest wound.
Let’s hope we see the beautiful game tonight. Enjoy the game.

I’ll be rooting for the USA, and hopefully not in vain.
It looks like Mexico has brought a stronger team to this match, and I’m sure there will be more El Tri supporters in the stands, as well.
Here’s hoping for an upset by the ‘Nats!
Good luck!

I got an idea for Mexico! BURN THOSE JERSEYS! Those dang green unis are “Salado” bad luck for the team. Those and last years!

Does this blog still exist? It sucks that the least active offside offspring is about the league I care the most about. Not one single post in over a month, and there have been fairly important and/or juicy news on the Mexican League. Shame.
