Eagles Fly High with Win Over UNAM
By: Darius | October 23rd, 2006
America soared to a 2-0 over crosstown rivals UNAM at Azteca Stadium Sunday, ending a six-year winless drought against the Pumas.
Mexican badboy Cuauhtémoc Blanco scored his third goal of the season (the first two were penalty kicks) by capitalizing on a defensive error by Pumas in the 32nd minute. Paraguayan Salvador Cabanas doubled the lead three minutes later with a right-footed blast just outside the penalty area.
In a show of sportsmanship, the teams exchanged hugs before kick-off. America, playng the game in the same kits they wore when they won the Mexican Championship in 1991, came out of the blocks swinging. UNAM, for their part, chose to defend and operate off the counter attack. Things were working out well until the defenders got caught cat-napping, and the pair of Eagles’ goals in quick succession proved too much of an obstacle for the Pumas to overcome.
UNAM tried to claw their way back into the game in the second half but Eagles’ goal-keeper Guillermo Ochoa was up to the task. The veteran “portero” snuffed out Pumas’ attacks time and again in the second half in securing a clean slate.
With the win, America soar to second in the Group 3 standings with 24 points, and second overall in the Mexican League. UNAM sit just behind America with 20 points.
