FRANTIC FRIDAY! News galore!

First things first, the opening legs of the semifinals for the Clausura title both took place on Thursday, with Pachuca and América both taking advantages into Sunday’s return legs.

Pachuca opened the day with a 3-1 win at Cruz Azul behind two goals from Christian Giménez. The Tuzos led 2-0 before Jared Borgetti scored on a penalty, but a late goal from Giménez all but handed the tie and a berth in the finals to Pachuca.

In the Azteca, América defeated their hated rivals Chivas 1-0 on a goal early in the second half from Salvador Cabañas. The tie is far from decided, however, with the return leg in Jalisco awaiting for the Águilas, who also have a quarterfinal date in the Copa Libertadores in Brasil against Santos on Wednesday.

The Cruz Azul game could feature even more drama, as it was announced on Friday that Salvador Carmona, a defender for the Cementeros, has been banned for life by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland. The organization handed the ban down on Wednesday, but Carmona appeared in the aforementioned game on Thursday.

Carmona, as you may remember, was sent home from the 2005 Confederations Cup along with teammate Aarón Galindo after testing positive for nandrolone. Carmona has 85 caps for El Tri and was a member of both the 1998 and 2002 World Cup squads.

The life ban stems from a second positive test which occurred in early 2006.

With the controversy hovering over the national team, coach Hugo Sánchez decided to name his preliminary roster for this summer’s Gold Cup, which will take place in the United States.

The two names that stick out are that of Cuauhtémoc Blanco, soon to be property of MLS’s Chicago Fire, and Olympiakos’s Nery Castillo, who was chosen earlier this year by Sánchez but backed out both times.

Roster:

Goalkeepers: Oswaldo Sanchez (Santos Laguna), Guillermo Ochoa (America), Jesus Corona (Tecos UAG), Luis Michel (Guadalajara)

Defenders: Rafael Marquez (Barcelona), Ricardo Osorio (Stuttgart), Carlos Salcido (PSV Eindhoven), Jonny Magallon (Guadalajara), Jose Antonio Castro (America), Israel Castro (Pumas UNAM), Francisco Rodriguez (Guadalajara), Ramon Morales (Guadalajara), Jaime Lozano (Tigres UANL), Fausto Pinto (Pachuca)

Midfielders: Pavel Pardo (Stuttgart), Gerardo Torrado (Cruz Azul), Jaime Correa (Pachuca), Alberto Medina (Guadalajara), Gonzalo Pineda (Guadalajara), Fernando Arce (Morelia), Andres Guardado (Atlas)

Forwards: Cuauhtemoc Blanco (America), Jared Borgetti (Cruz Azul), Omar Bravo (Guadalajara), Adolfo Bautista (Guadalajara), Francisco Fonseca (Tigres UANL), Juan Carlos Cacho (Pachuca), Nery Castillo (Olympiakos).
