I’m tired of playing the numbers game
By: Chris | March 30th, 2007One of the biggest problems I have with the Mexican League is something that my friends always give me shit about.
As much as I try to get them into the league, they always say, “What’s up with these stupid numbers these guys wear?”
Unfortunately, I have to agree with them.
Most soccer purists will agree that nobody should wear anything over #25, but as a fan of the Mexican League, there’s one number that is a classic in the league and deserves a pass.
#58 is legendary and will always be a trademark of the league. It all started with an homage to a Mexican radio station and has evolved into a tradition in Mexico. By far the most famous player to wear it religiously is Jared Borgetti, who’s worn it at Santos, Pachuca, Dorados and now Cruz Azul.
For years it was also the number of Bofo Bautista.
But he’s the fellow we can blame for the ridiculous numbers currently being worn.
A few seasons ago, we all laughed when he chose #100. What kind of a moron wears three numbers on his jersey?
But after a few seasons, we all came to accept it.
Nowadays, however, it’s become an epidemic.
Case in point: Including Bofo, at least five players in the league wear #100 or higher.
The best player of the bunch besides Bofo, Sebastian Abreu of San Luis, wears #113.
The rest of the players? Mostly ham and eggers who can only get attention with their absurd jerseys.
Here’s a list:
Veracruz - Luis Antonio Martinez - #108
Querétaro - Arturo Alvarado - #118 and José Piña - #119
How long until we see #999? Or something over 1,000?
Something here has to stop. Please, for the purity of the game. Put a lid on it.

That is stupid. I could see if it was a gimmick for a player like Romario going for 1,000 goals to wear a jersey with that number but to have multiple players wearing high numbers is just silly.

If Romario starts wearing 1000, I’ll personally piss on him. Although I may not be as vehemently opposed to high numbers as you are, I agree they’re annoying. I wore #17 this season with my club, and I still felt like an outcast.
