It’s on!

It might not be the final everyone was hoping for, but it’s definitely the most competitive final in Mexican soccer. The Goats of Guadalajara will lock horns with the Red Devils of Toluca in the second leg of the finals of the Mexican First Division’s Apertura tournament.
Toluca escaped with a draw in Jalisco on Wednesday. Omar Bravo put Chivas up early but Bruno Marioni equalized midway through the second half.
Chivas downed America last weekend in Mexico City, shutting them out for the third straight time this season. Toluca prevailed over 2006 Clausura champions Pachuca 2-1 on aggregate.
What makes the match-up intriguing is that it pits argueably the best team in Mexico history (Chivas) against argueably the best team since the short-tournament era began in 1996. Chivas has won 10 league championships but only two in the last 36 years. Their last trip to the finals was in 2004, when they lost to UNAM.
The Red Devils are playing in their seventh final since the new tournament format was instituted. The boys in red have won five of those (the most recent coming in December 2005).
Chivas began last season in impressive form but struggled after losing several key players to World Cup duty. Both teams will be at full strength for Sunday’s final.
