Mexico Loses Friendly
By: mirna | October 19th, 2007
This week wasn’t a good one for Hugo Sanchez. After losing to Guatemala on Wednesday, fans and the media in Mexico and elsewhere are questioning what Sanchez is really doing with El Tri. Is it a process that he has in his mind but that its not really working? I think that Mexico went into Wednesday’s game with the wrong attitude…thinking that they had the game in the bag and Guatemala surprised them. Losing is never fun but I think the problem is not losing against what some have called an “inferior” team, which I believe is highly insulting to a team that might not be a soccer superpower but it is a decent team. Tuca Ferreti had some choice words about Guatemala that offended a nation and a team that wanted to make him eat his words, which they did.
But leaving all that aside, one thing that is key is what teams is Mexico playing against in these friendlies and why they don’t go play in Europe, Asia or even Africa instead of playing 10+ games in the US a year. Like I mentioned in other posts, all these games are managed and arranged by the marketing arm of the MLS ( SUM) and it is a huge business to bring the Mexican team here because there is a market for it. The basic supply and demand concept. I agree with many that are questioning whether the FMF needs to look beyond this lucrative relationship with SUM and put the team first. Most of the current players need to play as a team against teams that will help them work through their flaws and not take games for granted as they did with Guatemala. Although, Mexico is a strong team is not yet at the level of the superpowers (i.e. Italy, Argentina, Brazil, etc.) and won’t be unless they grow as a team and not just think they are good but prove it.
I do hope that the FMF takes a hard look at where the team is now and take steps to fix it…if not, things will just stay the same and that would be a shame.

I agree with you, I have been saying the same sinces 1994. Actually is mostly the Media and the Fans who make Mexico bigger than what they are…..

Blanco sighting! Last night in Pilsen (small community on Chicago’s southside) I was eating at a small restaurant, and who should walk out of the backroom but Cuauhtemoc himself. It was pretty exciting!

i wonder if guatemala wins that game if they played it in azteca or azul. i mean, just because the majority of the fans in the stands are supporting you doesn’t make it your “home”, so there’s that. i imagine that el tri, before playing a game in mexico, has lots of support wherever you went(from the fans. the media kills you wherever you go).
