Mexico vs. Brazil - My Take
By: mirna | September 14th, 2007
It has taken me a couple of days to get a clear perspective of this game. I’ve seen it twice now and there are things that I like and things that I don’t. I like the fact that Mexico played without fear and much better than the way they played in the Gold Cup. I think the team is finally coming together and playing well. I can say this for the first half because I don’t know what happened in the second half. It almost seemed like a different team. I guess having the equalizer to their goal right away was not very encouraging. I still think that Memo Ochoa was great. He stopped some great shots. Nery Castillo was a bit lost until the play that ended with Mexico’s goal but I didn’t see much of him.
I wish that Hugo would have given Giovani Dos Santos a bit more playing time. To see what he can do. I struggle with this because I think that Mexico needs to focus on putting a team together for the Olympics and quite frankly, to qualify for the Olympics. This is not a done deal and qualifying should be a priority. The younger players didn’t get enough playing time to come together as a team. This game of marketing vs. team is getting old and I am getting tired of it. As a fan, it is tough to see how the sponsors and promoters have more to say as to what team Mexico brings to play. The games are all about the older stars playing in order to sell tickets. So I am torn. What is best? Watch your favorites play or prepare the team for the short and long term? As much as I love some players, some of them won’t be around for the World Cup in 2010. What to do?
Brazil won playing a good game. They weren’t amazing and not really the Brazil that we are all used to but they knew when to take advantage of mistakes. Kaka’s goal was just that…Rafa Marquez makes a mistake and Kaka took advantage of it. Great reaction by Kaka. So the score ended 3-1. Brazil did deserve to win…after all Brazil is Brazil.
