Nery looks good in Green
By: John | May 22nd, 2007
Mexican born, Uruguayan reared, and current Greek League dynamo, Nery Castillo reported to Mexican National Team duty yesterday, much to the amazement of most, except the one that matters most: Hugo Sanchez. He never doubted that Nery would keep his word, so here he is.
Nery had some choice comments about coming to Mexico — some highlights
He loves Mexican food — “sobre todo el picante” (he loves it spicy)
He was heavily criticized for not coming over the pond in the last call up –”There were a lot things said as to why I didn’t come, most of them lies. I explained my reasons to Hugo and asked him not to make them public. He understood and repected my privacy. I am endebtted to Hugo, and the best way to pay him back is to play well and score goals”
Why now, why not with the previous coach? Hugo treated me well from the very beginning. He did everything right, he sent his assistant to speak to me in person. Mr. Lavolpe never did any of that. We only communicated by telephone.”
” I am not here to shut people up, rather to help humbly help this team advance as far as possible.”
It is no big secret that Mexico’s National team has recently lacked scoring punch. Some folks may not care for Nery because he is not a “true mexican” (whatever that means). But the reality is that this kid can score goals, and he has scored them at the highest level (the champions league). Hugo Sanchez recognizes Mexico’s offensive anemia, and he is betting that Nery Castillo can help put the ball in the back of the net. I’ll take that bet as well.
Nery is set to debut with the Tri vs. Iran next saturday night in San Luis Potosi, ironically his birthplace.

I’m looking forward to seeing how he fits in with El Tri. I remember when he was really young and tapped to be the next great thing. Hard to believe he is still in his early 20s. He has a lot of high level football under his belt.

i just hope he proves he deserves all the attention he’s been getting, and yes, that means scoring goals for México

Nery has the tools (individual creatativity, speed and finishes plays)Mexico needs up front. Nery is something they lacked and desperately needed. I am excited to see him in the next World Cup along team mates Dos Santos, Vela, and Guardado.
