Pachuca, Atlas win
By: John | February 5th, 2007Pachuca got a 2nd half stoppage winner (is there a better way to win?) from Luis Angel Landin to knock off the defending champion chivas Saturday night. Landin’s goal proved to be the watershed in a tense game that didn’t really live up to expectation of two good teams battling on the pitch. Instead, it was a chippy slapfest.
Atlas, on the other hand, played an inspired game at the Azteca to knock off the Cremas, 1-0. It was their first victory over America since 2002. The scoreline only shows one goal, but Atlas peppered Memo Ochoa consistently, and quite frankly should have added more. It was Juan Pablo Santiago that did get through, though, for the lone goal. Atlas is shaping up to be a major contender for the Clausura title, and America, they have the enough offensive firepower to where 2 straight scoreless games shouldn’t be disconcerting…yet.
On a positive note for America, el More, Juan Carlos Mosqueda saw his first action of the season. This kid has star written all over him. He should get called up to National team very soon.
Other games of note:
UNAM gets off the schnide with a convincing 2-0 win over Jaguares. Their injured players are returning to the line, which can’t happen any faster for them as they continue to battle relegation.
Cruz Azul heads north to the Sultana and gets the 2-1 victory over Monterrey. Jared Borgetti has 2 goals in 3 games for Cruz Azul — not bad.
Santos lost again and has yet to earn a point in the tournment, and the spectre of relegation is moving ever closer. This team emptied the coffers to bring in talent: Oswaldo Sanchez, Mathias Vuozo, and Daniel Ludueña, so we should see some results soon.
