Playoff picture clears up…

By: Chris | April 9th, 2007

Three weeks and a handful of makeup games to go, and we have our first team qualified for the playoffs.

After finishing off Houston in the CONCACAF Champions Cup semifinals on Thursday, Pachuca came out and thumped Jaguares 3-0 at home on Sunday to become the first team to qualify for the Liguilla.

The Tuzos are sitting pretty with 30 points and an amazing +20 goal differential atop Group 2. Not to mention that they have a game in hand, Pachuca might want to take my advice and start losing some games so that they don’t end up with the dreaded curse of being the #1 seed.

Nipping at their heels are Cruz Azul with 26 points and América and Chivas each with 24 points, although Chivas also have a game in hand.

From there, it’s a muddled mess. Every team is still alive except for pathetic Veracruz. Atlas sits in the unlucky position of being 5th overall but 3rd in their group, meaning that if the tournament finished today, they’d be forced to play their way into the final 8.

18 points is the cutoff right now, with Tecos sitting in 8th place overall but 4th in Group 2, albeit with a game in hand.

Another race that has become crystal clear is the race to avoid relegation.

With 6 points from their final 3 matches, Querétaro will guarantee their permanence in the Primera Division, with Santos Laguna going down.

Anything less and it will take some dropped points from Santos to help the White Roosters.

In the Primera A, the race to see who will play Puebla (the Apertura champs) for promotion is heating up, with perennial contenders León, recently relegated Dorados de Culiacán and one-time Primera Division team Celaya looking as the most-likely candidates to meet the Camoteros in the two-game playoff.

I wouldn’t bet my money on Cruz Azul. They always start off strong and tend to deflate as time goes on. I think they get too cocky for their own good and end up with a surprised look on their faces once they’re out.

My money is on Chivas at the moment.

basically don’t bet on Cruz Azul winning the tournament anytime soon because they loose momentum, FAST!
