Race Towards the Finals
By: Darius | October 30th, 2006
Group standings after Jornada 15:
Group 1
Cruz Azul 26
Chivas 23
Atlas 23
Jaguares 22
Querétaro 20
Necaxa 17
Group 2
Pachuca 24
Monterrey 23
San Luis 22
Atlante 21
Veracruz 20
Tecos 12
Group 3
Toluca 26
América 25
Pumas 23
Morelia 17
Querétaro 20
Tigres 11
Santos 10
Los Tecos (UAG), Los Tigres (UANL) and Santos Laguna all saw their “Liguilla” hopes go out the door, while Morelia and Necaxa seem too eager not to let that same door slam in their faces. Everyone else is pretty much in the thick of things.

Sure thing Sam. Here goes:
There are two seasons in Mexico’s Primera División: The Aperatura (opening season) and Clausura (closing season). We’re actually knee-deep into the Aperatura season; the season begins in late summer and ends in December. The second part of the season begins a few weeks after.
18 teams, divided into 3 groups of 6 teams each, partake in the 17-date Aperatura season. Each date is called a Jornada, and throughout the season, each team will play eachother once. At the end of the season, the top two teams from each group automatically qualify for the “Liguilla” or play-offs. the next four teams in the overall standings play a mini tournament, where the first-best of the four faces off with the fourth, while the second and third-best face off. The two teams that emerge winners from the mini tourney qualify for the Liguilla.
I plan to do blog more about the Liguilla in the coming weeks. thanks for your interest and keep up the good work with the French soccer league blog!!!
