Survivor: Mexico
By: Darius | October 20th, 2006
And then there were four.
The Mexican Federation’s National Team Committee revealed yesterday they had narrowed the job search for a coach down to four men.
Decio de Maria, the federation’s general secretary, told the press, “We’re not going to discuss names and nationalities. This isn’t a guessing game. “The committee is taking its job seriously.”
Just how seriously, you ask?
So seriously that de Maria forgot what he said two minutes before and revealed former Real Madrid striker-turned Necaxa coach Hugo Sanchez was among the candidates. He also revealed there were foreigners being considered for the position. Mexican media is dropping names like former Germany coach Juergen Klinsmann, former Argentina midfielder Americo Gallego and former Argentina coach Marcelo “el Loco” Bielsa. Bielsa has also been linked to the Colombian National Team.
If you were part of that oh-so-secretive committee, who would you vote for coach? My money is on Sanchez, though I wouldn’t be surprised if Bielsa gets the nod.

They have to give it to Hugo Sanchez. He is a legend and he knows Mexican football better than Klinsmann and the other candidates.

Exactly. Plus bringing in a foreigner to coach the squad doesn’t usually sit too well with the Mexican press.

I was really hoping that Jose Pekerman’s name would be on that list…

Pekerman would make a nice fit, and he could very well be on the Committee’s shortlist. Former Azzuri coach Marcelo Lippi was actually named as a candidate today: http://www.esmas.com/deportes/futbol/576461.html
