There’s a New Sheriff in Town…

hugo sanchezAnd his name is Sánchez. Hugo Sánchez.

Former Real Madrid super-striker Sánchez has been appointed coach of the Mexican National Team. He replaces Ricardo La Volpe, who is now coaching Argentine side Boca Juniors.

Widely regarded as Mexico’s best-ever player, the 48-year-old Sánchez played for Madrid in the 1980s, during which time he helped the club to five consecutive Primera División titles, scoring 164 goals in 240 appearances. After retiring as a player in 1997, his most recent gig was as coach of Necaxa. Before that, he led UNAM to back-to-back titles.

“I want us to be world champions and not limit ourselves to the quarter or semifinals,” he told reporters.

Whoa, slow down there Hoss. The last time Mexico made it to the quarterfinals of the World Cup, the Mets won the World Series, Pinochet was still in power, and my teacher was trying to get me to “see Spot run.” One step at a time.

What do you make of this? Personally, I would have gone with Pekerman, but what do i know.

Happy to see Hugo get the job for a few reasons:

    1. Mexico has proven that they can play with anyone, they need the confidence to know they can beat anyone. Hugo can instill that confidence better than anyone.

    2. Hugo will encourage players to go to Europe. The euro leagues have better players, and it is hard to see how good you really are when you play St Vincent and Dominca for qualifiers. This way players will face stiff competition week after week.

    3. Say goodbye to the lack of scoring. Mexico is poised to have the strongest back line they have ever had, so Hugo can focus more on the set up men and the finishers. Vela and dos Santos will be busy in Canada this summer, so they won’t suit up for Gold Cup or Copa America. But Sanchez has already told them both that they will be a big part of his master plan. Throw Castillo into the mix and Mexico will field its most complete team, well, ever.
