Week 1: Apertura Tournament

By: Albert | July 28th, 2008

So week one is in the bag. Games of interest were the Chivas vs Cruz Azul, Santos vs America.

In the Chivas vs Cruz Azul game, it was going to be interesting how new GK Sergio Rodriquez was going to handle the pressure of his new role as the replacement for injured Luis Michel. So the first thing he does is block an early Penalty. What a way to start off your first whole game in 1st division. Chivas went on to score off a set piece by Gonzo Pineda, then CA came back with a tying goal. Chivas returned with another goal by Omar Arellano off an excellent pass down the middle. Omar reacted with his recently typical celebration of pointing at his name/number 9 on the back of his jersey. Towards the end of the game, CA went on the attack with many dangerous situations. They finally tied it up in stoppage time by a goal from Zeballos.

In the America vs Santos game, America goes up 3-0 by 2 goals from Cabanas and 1 from Insua, who made a nice return. Guillermo Ochoa made some great saves throughout the whole game but toward the end Santos scored two, to make a slight comeback.

Pumas vs Necaxa, Dante Lopez debuted with his first goal in the Mexican league as Pumas won 2-0. Paco Palencia went out with an injury.

Tigres vs Pachuca tied at 0s. Tigres not looking good for relegation. Speaking of that Indios lost to Tecos.

Atlas vs Jaguares, was a blow out. Bofo got a red card for a undeserved elbow. It was a bit exaggerated by the Atlista. Some really bad reffing and some bad play by Jaguares led to this score. Not to take away a pretty good game by newcomer Botinelli for Atlas.

Atlante beat a Toluca without Zinha 2-1.

San Luis and Morelia tied at 1s, as well as Puebla and Monterrey.

A lot of goals scored and pretty entertaining games. Sergio Rodriguez impressed, Memo Ochoa did also, JP Rodriguez scored a very nice goal for Santos. Very good 1st Week.

Here are some highlights from the America Game.

Albert - thank you for the update. It was a great first week and although my Rayados had a tough time with Puebla. The Puebla fans were great though and good to see them back. Btw, the Indios played more aggressive then I expected and could surprise some people - we’ll see.
