We’ll have a new U-17 World Champion
By: Chris | April 8th, 2007Quite sad, indeed.
With all the expectations in the world to live up to, Mexico’s U-17 team was disgracefully humbled in the CONCACAF qualifiers for this summer’s U-17 World Cup in South Korea.
0-0 draws against Haiti and Honduras sealed the young Aztecs fate as the 2005 champions are shedding a few tears right now.
Another big step back for a nation that looks to be on the verge of finally making some noise in the international spectrum.
Maybe it was the expectations, maybe it was just the fact that this team isn’t nearly as good as the team that took the title two years ago in Peru.
But after the high that resulted from Mexico’s first-ever World Championship at any level of international soccer, it’s hard not to feel a little disappointed.
Fear not, however, as the real fireworks begin in July in Canada. The U-20 World Cup takes place with many of the members from the 2005 U-17 World Champions will once again suit up for El Tri.
I personally can’t wait for Carlos Vela, Giovani Dos Santos, Cesar Villaluz, Adrian Aldrete and the other national heroes to show once again why Mexico should be feared in South Africa in 2010 and probably again in 2014.
