Would you bet against Pachuca in Japan?

By: Chris | April 26th, 2007

After winning the Copa Sudamericana in December, Pachuca added another international title to their trophy case on Wednesday night, winning the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

The Tuzos will now make their way to Japan this December for the Club World Cup, and I’m not betting against them. If they can keep their lineup intact, they’re my champions. I’ll be the first to say it.

I don’t care who wins the Champions League or Copa Libertadores or the African Champions League. This team is on an unbelievable roll and needs to be mentioned in any conversation about the best teams in the world.

Some might say that the fact they couldn’t close out Chivas until penalties at home might be a sign of weakness, but Chivas has easily been the 2nd-best team in the Clausura and is the 2nd-best team in Mexico right now. A bitter pill for Jorge Vergara to swallow, but hey, he can get his revenge in the upcoming Clausura playoffs and in this fall’s Copa Sudamericana, where Chivas will go as the runners-up in the CONCACAF Champions Cup and Pachuca will go as defending champions.

In other international news, Necaxa booked their place in the Copa Libertadores Round of 16 with a 2-0 win at home over Alianza Lima. Necaxa will actually enter the next round as winners of Group 2 after Sao Paulo tied Audax Italiano 2-2, sending the Tricolores, the 2005 champions, into the next round.

Tonight, Toluca looks to become the 3rd Mexican team in the Round of 16 when they host Cienciano of Peru. All the Diablos Rojos need is a tie, as Boca Juniors and Bolivar will be playing at the same time. Anything less than a win will put the Argentines out of the tournament.

They have been outstanding. It will be fun to see how that fare in Japan — not that the World Championship is a true indication of who’s the best.

I’ve enjoyed the Champions Cup, but that was a pretty dull final game. Still, Pachuca have definitely impressed me.
