Word of the week: Failure

By: Albert | March 18th, 2008

Hugo Sanchez

After not Qualifying for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing the Mexican National Team and Technical Director Hugo Sanchez are hearing the word, ‘Failure’ over and over, and even recognizing that not qualifying IS a Failure. The 5-1 win against Haiti was not enough to surpass Canada in Goal differential, who beat Guatemala 5-0. Guatemala, who finished atop of the group made if very difficult for Mexico by letting Canada score 5 goals.

For Mexico there are no excuses. The Mexican selection, consisting of many U-17 World Cup champions, could not beat Canada and gave up 3 points in a loss to Guatemala.

This tournament will forever be remembered for the missed opportunities. The Haiti game easily could have been 10-1, with easily qualification. This was the first game in a while where I saw 4 players attacking a lone goal keeper. So a very valid point is that all of the fault shouldn’t rest on Hugo Sanchez. Cesar Villaluz, Memo Ochoa and others have spoken out defending their Head Coach.

So now the Mexican Club owners will give their opinions on whether Hugo stays or goes. Date set is 31 March 2008 for Hugo to report to the Mexican Federation. There seems to be some questions as to who would take his place. Time will only tell. As far as I am concerned, I am on the fence. Hugo has put plenty of doubt, but Lavolpe and other coaches did not bring as much hope as Hugo did during Copa America, where Nery Castillo exploded with great performances.

The next few weeks should be very interesting. Especially the results from the upcoming friendly between the Mexican Senior Team vs Ghana.

The Ghana match is pretty much the final deciding factor in whether he stays or not. This is an absolute disaster for Mexico and the fans, we are much better than this and ego got the best of us.

The thing that really makes me mad is that the club owners wont meet, because they are on vacations until the Ghana game.

The Mexico-Ghana friendly is a pretty interesting one, and I’ll be rooting for El Tri to take it. Two teams right next to each other in FIFA Rankings, 15 and 16. Should be a good match, but if the coach loses it, I think you’re right that he’s probably gone.

Melissa- the senior team is very good, indeed… however, they still need a good trainer.
This has been called “The Golden Generation” and without a doubt any coach, in this case, Hugo Sanchez, to have them is a privilege and a blessing. But is having Hugo Sanchez as the coach a blessing to the “Golden Generation?” Honestly, he iss the greatest player yet to come out of Mexico but this does not necessarily translate to great coach. He has had success as a coach and yet, little experience at it overall. Mexico’s “Golden Generation” is not something that should be squandered by a coach that has created so much doubt, who has failed time and again on his promises, while there are so many other far more experienced and successful coaches out there. Mexican fans everywhere should not become accustomed to failure and disapointment.
Here then is my question: If Hugo is to be put out, who are the realistic and potential candidates out there for coach?? Time is not on our side concerning the upcoming WC quals if Hugo is put out… better to have a coach than not one at all.
